Why I Should Blog

February 14th, 2009

Clearly, I am late to the blogging scene. Blogs have been out… what… 5 or 6 years already?  Wars have been started, natural disasters have taken place all in the time that I have refused to join this growing trend.  My lonely web site sat empty for many years without a single post or a single blog until today. So, what changed?

So much, really. But, what has not changed is this; the search engines such as Google and Yahoo have been consolidated. Freedom of the internet is hampered by this consolidation (we used to call it monopolization) of the major search engines. Try it for yourself. Go to Google and type in a search phrase. Now, look at the results total. Maybe you will see a total such as 500,000 web pages. Maybe 1,000,000. Now, start going through the first result page and look at the validity of the returns. Keep going to page 2. Then go to page 3 and 4. If you notice, by the time you get to page 3 or 4, the validity of the matches is way off base. Possibly, the sites you see listed have nothing to do with your key word phrase at all.

Are we to believe, then, that out of 1,000,000 web sites, Google and Yahoo can find only 3 pages worth of sites that meet a typical search criteria?

Yes, you can tether the BlackberryYou may be asking yourself what in heck is this guy talking about.  So, let me get straight to the point.   I found myself searching for some information about my Blackberry Curve 8320.  Specifically, I have an unlimited internet account with my wireless provider and I wanted to learn how to tether my Blackberry to my laptop so I can have internet access on the go.  Thus, with a goal in mind and a good search phrase, I searched Google.

The results were as I described above.  I mean, from the Google search results, I began to think that almost no one had ever written about tethering a Blackberry phone to their laptop.  In reality, I knew this wasn’t true.  But, far be it from me to challenge the high and mighty Google monopoly.  No, for certain, it must be true because Google search results are unchallenged by any other player aside from Yahoo.  I have a suspicion that this is only an appearance of competition.  I don’t think Google is concerned.

So, it’s up to me to do it.  I have decided that I can post instructions about how to tether right here on my blog.  Then, after Google “graciously” spiders my blog site, then they will place it in with the other 500,000-1,000,000 web pages which have no relevance to the search phrase.  But, maybe, just maybe someone will find my post about tethering the Blackberry and other various subjects without wasting so much time on the monopolies such as Google and Yahoo.

All hail Google.  Or, as I see it, to hell with Google.

That’s why I should blog.
