I purchased a new HTC HD2 from TMobile here in the USA on June 15, 2010. One of the features of the HTC HD2 which sold me is the ability to easily set up the phone as a wireless router. I had read the online user guide before I purchased the phone and it stated that the wireless router was a feature included on the HTC HD2 right out of the box. I found out that was not correct in the case of my purchase with T-Mobile.
T-Mobile removed that piece of software from the HTC HD2 before they released them. Thus, there is no out-of-the-box wireless wifi router functionality on the TMobile HTC HD2. Don’t fret as I did, though, because you can easily download and install the same software which was removed by TMobile and use your phone as a wifi router. Here is what I did.
- Download the software to your pc. FreewarePocketPC.net has many great downloads available for the HTC HD2. http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/get-mobile-wi-fi-router.html
- Transfer the download file to your telephone so that you can install it. To transfer the downloaded file from your pc to your phone, you can use the active sync software, or USB or blue tooth to do this. Remember to which directory you place the download file on your phone. (Bluetooth help)
- Once you have transferred the download file to your phone, go to START>FILE MANAGER. Browse to the directory to which you downloaded the file in step 1 above. Make sure you see the download file.
- Click on that file and allow Windows Mobile to install it. Once it has finished installing, REBOOT the telephone. You can reboot by pressing and holding down the end call key. After a couple of seconds, a menu will be displayed. Choose ‘Power Off and wait for the phone to turn off. Once it is off, press the red power button to turn it back on. Removing and replacing the battery will do a similar thing.
- Once your phone has finished booting up, go to your HOME screen on the phone. On the bottom of the HOME screen, navigate to and click on SETTINGS. When the settings screen is displayed, click on MENU on the bottom of the screen. Then click on ALL SETTINGS.
- You should now see a list of icons. Click on the CONNECTIONS icon. You will now see a different set of icons. Click on WIFI INTERNET SHARING.

- Type in a Name for your connection.
- Type in a 10 digit WEP password (letters and/or numbers).
- Make sure the box is NOT checked next to “Use these settings without asking next time”. If you check the box, then the wifi router software will run continuously and will drain your battery more quickly.
- Click start at the bottom of the menu screen to start up the wifi router software on your HTC HD2.
- If all goes well, on your PC, you should be able to view the HTC HD2 wifi router name and you should be able to connect to it using the 10 digit WEP pass code you set on the HD2.
That should do it. Small variations in software over time may alter the accuracy of this tutorial. I hope this helps you enjoy your new HTC HD2, the most awesome phone I have ever owned.
